Background: a few months ago I had a car run into my front door, pushed the latch side in about a foot. I had it temporarily repaired so the door closes and is secure. Insurance took a while to pay and lowballed me so I have been unable to get a contractor out to repair. I’m looking to fix it myself now.

Question: the door frame is split at the latch, any advice on replacing just that side of the frame, or somehow reinforcing it so that door will be secure with the deadbolt?

The go to for "good enough for now" home repair jobs.

Seriously though, securing the door and deadbolt latch into a stud is an easy way to improve security. Won't keep cars out but will take a few more kicks from a human

This what I have temporarily, I want to replace that frame so I can get rid of that hideous block of wood.

I believe I have bought the door frame type pre painted wood before. But you have to deal with the seal.

If you want to do it inexpensive and are not in a hurry you could take it out carefully, and wood glue/clamp/small screws/wood filler patch it together. They are stapled at the top usually and can be a pain to get out without more damage.

Looks like you can get a frame kit at Depot

Thanks that gives me some direction.

I've switched out the striker plates for the latch and deadbolt for a single tall one that connects them together and used 4" screws, but that's for after the frame is repaired/replaced so the stress of securing the door is no longer on the frame. It' still won't be car-resistant though. :D

I don’t plan on another car, but maybe some steel poles out front.

Absolute BS if insurance didn't cover a full door replacement and appropriate patching of the walls adjacent to the door. I assume it wasn't your car😆😬

Nope, uber eats and he didn’t have proper insurance.

Uber not willing to pay up since it was one of their clowns?

Uber drivers(and DoorDash, Instacart, GrubHub et al) are on an independent contractor agreement, they aren’t employees of Uber, so when a driver fucks up like this Uber will just wash their hands of them and if you complain they can simply claim “not our responsibility”.

Sounds about right. Can you at least complain enough that Uber bans him?

We did complain and yes it’s in his insurance and he didn’t have proper insurance to be an independent contractor. His insurance probably dropped him.

They still should be covering it under his liability policy. That's literally the point of being required to have at least state minimum coverage. They carried the risk in covering him. If anything, they should be crapping their pants praying you don't sue them and/or find any more structural damage to the house.

Send a message to the NCDOI. NC is a contributory fault state, meaning that a party who is 1% or more at fault is barred from recovery. Obviously a house is not at fault when a car hits it, so they shouldn't be able to weasel out of a collision claim.

One of my aunts lived on a curve, and had this problem. They added some 4-5' landscaping rocks, and are doing their part to keep idiots off the road. She made stickers for dui, drugs, etc. that she puts on the big state sign out front, lol.
