So my cougar needs a tranny, it’s been a month with out her so far and she’s my daily so we’re juggling cars. I’m going to take her to Rob on Monday the 10th. I’m thinking of buying a beater to drive for a month or so till she’s fixed and I found this. The only problem I see is I’ll want to keep her.
Any insight in what to look for?

Looks like a solid car for the price. Being a 90s model they have the same transmission.... so with 185k is it going to be any more reliable? For the price it's probably worth it either way since it looks clean and they are not getting any easier to find. If your looking for something to spend time on fixing up go for it.

To be honest though if you are just looking for a cheap driver to get by in .... IMO look for something newer. Probably won't go over well here, but for a cheap daily I'd be looking for a Toyota/Honda :zshrug:

Theres a red one with tinted windows nearby that I like to go 'visit' when Im walking the dog. Probably the best looker in the neighborhood outside of a garage. Im sure you could get lost in it, Kenz is probably right if you're looking to pick up something more casual for an interim

I think those had air ride suspension which was always problematic. I think it's where kids got the idea for the "Carolina lean" you see on trucks/suvs nowadays where the front is lifted and the rear is lowered and to me it looks like a dog pooping

I know they float instead of carve the road. Only issues I've known are power steering switch going out and having to adjust brake master cylinder push rod (7mm) to give more pedal.

Actually, after 94, they stiffened the suspensiion and ride and they handle much better. This DA lady pulled in my lane on the highway at 60+ and I had to swerve to miss from nailing her rear end. the car took the hard jerk of the steering wheel and handled excellent. I almost bought a 94 that has the 5.0 engine. It road like a lazy boy on wheels. I have a 95 and it is much different. The newer models after 97 are even stiffer from what I have been told and do not ride like the 95-97 models.

But yes, the tranny and engine in these cares are very reliable.... as long as the owner took care of them. I have a friend that has a 95 and is going over 300k on his Town Car. But he is always fixing parts and keeping it running. Unlike my Cougar, I have not had to do any major work on this car's engine or tranny.

Honestly, with that high of mileage, I think they may be asking a bit much. I would offer $1500 or less. But that's me. I would try to find a Town Car or Mercury Grand Marquie / Ford Crown Vic with lower miles.

The biggest negative to one as a daily would be fuel mileage and not being super fun to park, however if that doesn’t matter to you a 4.6 Panther comes as close as it gets to a Ford Camry, but in the case of a Town Car of this generation way way more luxurious, pleasant and (imo) better looking.
