Buying daughter a car

In the used vehicle market, the GOAT for reliability goes to Toyota. If performance is important, anything with the 3.5 V6 will haul ass and be amazingly reliable. That engine has been around for a long time, has timing chains, and it didn't get direct injection early on like other car companies went with.
Camry or Highlander are great options, if you want fancy Lexus used the same engines and chassis but they cost a bit more. Used Toyotas go for a higher price compared to other brands but it's for a reason
Second this, whenever someone comes to the shop and asks advice on what to buy, my first pick is always a Toyota. RAV4 or 4Runner for SUV, Camry/Corolla for car.

... and don't fall for the BS prices people think the car is worth because everything is expensive. Used is still used and should not be worth "more" because everything else has gone through the roof. Just my two cents. I go by what the credit union or bank goes by for the current price of a car. That is what they will loan you and should be a good standard for a price range.

I haven’t been in the used car market for a long time because of this.

Carmax is a great starting place if you aren't sure what car you want. They don't have the best prices compared to shopping around at smaller dealers. However, they have a huge selection, and their salespeople are not pushy. You can go in and look at and test drive vehicles. It can really help you get an idea of what you like and want to buy.
From my experience when buying a car there, you will get good service. I bought my truck from them and had some issues with it. But they were very accommodating and went out of their way to make sure things worked out for me.
