As expected, my transmission needs to be rebuilt/replaced. (97 LX 4.6). What other vehicles have directly compatible transmissions that i could get out of a junkyard or buy used?

Mustang GTs, Mark VIIIs, non-police Crown Vic’s and Grand Marquis, but all before 2003 as that year and beyond won’t have teeth for the VSS. They’re not all completely direct fits either, 99-02 will require repinning the harness and technically the shift lever should be swapped(I never did on my 99 Mustang transmission swap though)

Fixed :)

Differences within the 4R70W and AODE Family
There are several other items about the transmissions worth noting.

Beyond the differences in the bellhousing patterns, the case changed during the 1995 model year and the 1997 model year. Several of the passages were reinforced to add strength to the case walls during the 1995 model year, and at the start of the 1997 model year, all 4.6L and 5.4L cases had the exhaust passage for the forward clutch relocated to provide more consistent exhausting of the forward clutch.

Main Transmission Connector
Beginning with the 1998 model year, a different pin arrangement was used in the main connector on the transmission (the one at the passenger side rear). Even though the connector is the same, and you can plug them in, you cannot put a 1998 and beyond transmission in a 1997 and prior vehicle (or vice versa) without re-arranging all the pins in the connector; the transmission will NOT shift.

Manual Lever Position Sensor (M.L.P.S.)
There was also a change to the sensor on the driver’s side of the transmission that senses where you have put the gear selector. All 1997 and beyond Mark 8s and all 4R70Ws starting in 1998 went to a totally different sensor. They do not interchange, the hardware in the EEC is different to support the newer sensor. You must keep the sensor that your car came with if you are thinking of swapping in a newer transmission.

The cv and gran marquis manual levers have to be swapped with the original, they rotate the wrong way; the cable is above the center, ours is below it.
swap in our vss, man lever ,mlps, and repin the connector. I've done so many at this point, I could do it asleep.
I personally find 02 gran marquis trans' ,rebuild them, swap the parts over on the bench, install the 'superior shift improver kit, the sonnax reinforcement plate, and their super tuff plate, which does the j-mod.
I've done 3 this way, (out of ~10 total, lol). and all are still going strong.
All burnt direct clutches, except for 1 broken stator support, and 1 roasted overrun clutch.
