Does anyone happen to know if the 3.8 LX dipstick tube diameter is standard? I broke mine flush with the block and see an extractor tool, but it starts at 4.6 and bigger engine sizes. I am tempted to make one with a self tapping screw, socket, and washeršŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Any suggestions welcomed.

Does anyone know the Lokar part number for a usable dipstick for my 3.8 LX? I can’t find a stock one or after market anywhere online

This is going to be one of those questions that is tough to answer unless someone has a dipstick handy. I have a couple of SC dipstick tubes, but I'm away from home for a while.

This is the part that you need, and good news is that Ford parts sites list it as the same between a Mustang 3.8 V6 and Thunderbird 3.8 V6, so you can open up your search a bit if you still want a stock dipstick tube.

Thank you! Yes, I have the part number but did not expand my search yet. I have been looking for a few hours with no luck. Not even Lokar.
I have time, as mine broke off at the block and I have some extracting to do first. Thanks for responding. So, is the SC the same as LX? Support flange probably different right šŸ¤”

I don't know if the SC dipstick tube is the same as the N/A. Have you checkec junkyards for Mustangs? I believe 94-98 V6 might all be the same.

The SC dipstick / tube make a longer bend around the lower IC tube. Can't confirm the hole in the block is the same size but it should be. The other difference is that pre 93 was a tube and cap design .. 94 and later used an O ring to seal the dipstick to the tube.

I’m just trying to find a replacement for when I get the broken piece out. The OEM dimensions of the part number are:

22.4 x 10.8 x 4.4 inches

Anyone care to share how they come up with that? lol

It's probably just the size of the box it ships in. I didn't see anything on ebay. I'd see if any local junkyards have any Mustangs. Most around here are usually overflowing with V6 Mustangs, but they are strangely missing at the moment. The older non split port V6 cars are getting rare up here.

Well, I consider myself lucky to a degree. I got the broken piece out fairly easy with the help of a small slide hammer.
Does anyone know the part number for a Lokar dipstick? I see several for V8 applications. Is the hole the same size for the tube?
Silly car has been ready to start for over a week, but this whole dipstick debacle held me back.
Thanks again to all.

I honestly cannot say. These are two dipsticks in my part hoard. One is from an 89-90ish SC. The other is from a 93 SC. I don't know how/if they differ from yours. The smaller diameter measures around .325". The larger diameter before the lip which is probably the actual press fit diameter is .368-.369. Maybe you can inquire with Lokar what their 302 dipsticks measure.IMG_3354.png

Mine also did not have any evidence of o-ring either šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Mine broke flush with block and sent of couple of inquiries off. My flange was also broken, so perhaps I can get creative with it and a aftermarket product of some sort.

found one for a v6 Mustang same year, change car to the Tbird and it says it won’t fitšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Same year, same motor

Do you know what the part number you found is? When I switched between Mustang and Thunderbird for the link I posted above it said it fit both cars. I don't always trust some of the cross references.

The S in F4SZ would indicate a Thunderbird part number (or at least it should) for what it is worth. Can you get a pic of the "Mustang" tube and see if it matches up with what you have?

The one I found that indicates a fit for 3.8 mustang and not the Tbird. I realize they are not referring to OEM part #’s. But found it weird

Yeah, that appears to be a Ford Racing chrome dipstick that is probably made to fit many different years and engines which means it won't fit anything without modification. Also Ford Racing doesn't really acknowledge that Ford built any other passenger cars than the Mustang. I would stick with an original production style part if you want a direct fit. Have you checked any junkyards around you for V6 Mustangs?

I have not gone to salvage yard in hopes of finding one already pulled. I have hade zero luck. Most yards that I’ve seen on line don’t list the dipstick or tube.
It’s hitting the extreme heat season here in DFW. I will continue looking and calling junk yards.
Lokar does not have one either per a Q & A I utilized.

We’re in extreme heat here in Raleigh and I wouldn’t want to go to a bone yard to pull stuff either, shoot I don’t want to wrench in my driveway right now.

Might have to break out the snake boots and a boonie!!! Lots of self serve junk yards. Might need a long stick too! lol
Thanks again for the inputšŸ‘

So ready to get this back on the road. It was my daily driver after I painted it 😢

Found one in Delaware that is supposedly ā€œAā€ quality. So I have it coming to me.

Last question; Is or was there an O-ring that was used by OEM? I didn’t see one upon removal of the broke one.

Thanks again everyone and Happy Independence Day šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øšŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øšŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø
