Let's Talk Movies Thread

Oh, I thought that this was going to be a thread about the BirdCats movie! Boy is my face red!:king:
I can’t wait to see the casting choices

Anyone see killers of the flower moon yet? Looks like an interesting premise but I’m a little soured on Scorsese after the Irishman, I don’t mind a long ass movie but not if it’s a meandering bore.

Best movie last year: Triangle of Sadness. A satire about influencers.

Great movie this year: Paradise (Netflix). A thriller about a company trading life time between humans.

I thought this was a thread about MN12 sightings in movies.

As a serious history buff. I'm so looking forward to the new Ridley Scott Napoleon movie.

and Trailer #2 with a kick ass Black Sabbath War Pigs soundtrack overlay

Haven't seen it yet but it's on my radar for sure.

For any movies I've seen this year, Natural Born Killers was my favorite. I don't particularly enjoy over the top violent movies, but I like how they
painted the media as the villain

The Final Countdown was pretty cool too. I like to think that
the whole entire purpose of the mission was to go back and rescue her dog and nothing else. I dont know. Time travel shit is very confusing.

The Lawnmower Man not so much. Fun! But awful. But fun. But terrible.

Two movies I recently watched:
Avatar 2 - might have been a spectacle at the theaters but it was basically a "colonizer brutality porn". I don't really remember it but it felt like Mel Gibson's The Patriot with blue people.

The Ballerina - Korean straight to Netflix is a by-the-numbers lady goes on a revenge/rampage movie. Apparently that's what netflix's algo says I enjoy (and they aren't entirely wrong), it was a pretty decently made movie visually but its not super memorable. Quick summary is small asian woman goes nuts exacting revenge on a group that drove her ballerina friend to suicide. Not as pure as "you killed my dog, I'm going to destroy everyone" but okay to watch (just don't count the # of rounds shot before reloads in some scenes).

Fun Observation: police in South Korea rock revolvers. REVOLVERS. Like its a small town Mayberry or the Wild west. This is a country where every male kid has to do 18-24 months of military service so they KNOW what real guns are like.... but so few are owned privately that they generally don't worry about criminals carrying firearms. In comparison, here in the US where police need to worry about gangbangers carrying DIY Glocks w/ giggle switches AND AR15s/AKs. I watched another korean series (My Name, similar to The Departed but with a woman) and korean gangs tend to get stabby with sushi knives vs breaking out in guns.

Well this is certainly interesting: when I read that Netflix planned to enter brick and mortar stores, I was wondering WTF this was about. Having beaten Blockbuster at the last mile delivery to customers, why would they want to go

Seems like they want to tap into their "brands" to (obviously) make more money.
Here's an example (related to movies/shows) I recently read about: https://www.netflix.com/tudum/squid-game-the-trials

This "experience" lets you "live" playing a Squid Game and then eat Korean food and drinks. I suspect they aren't shooting at you if you screw up (at least not even with blanks). Considering its LA, getting the pop up restaurant & bar is probably a whole helluva lot easier to staff up than say in Denver, CO or Dallas, TX.

As far as a new show is concerned, there's going to be a reality show released this Nov as well. 456 people racing to win $4.56M

That's right, getting a gun in Korea is very difficult so theres a lot of oppurtunity for close quarters action. The early 2010's were amazing years for korean movies and I went through a lot of them back then. Their respect for each shot being a painting is paramount to the experience. Absolutely recommend A Bittersweet Life.

Lawnmower man came out when I was in High School. All my guy friends loved it. 30 years ago that was a crazy concept.
I love The Final Countdown. Its not about the 🐶 though. Things get changed.

Gran Turismo was a good one imo.

I showed my son The Matrix for the first time this weekend. I forgot just how good the original one was!

As for Killers of the Flower Moon, I read the book a few years ago, and it was fascinating! I’ll probably watch it when it comes to streaming as I doubt there is going to be that much visually to justify seeing it on the big screen, but the story is astonishing!

Funny you mention the Matrix... just bought the BD combo pack to free up shelf space in the theater and upgrade from the Goodwill DVDs I bought years back. I didn't spring for UHD because of the 400% price premium over regular BDs. I know Grog said the VFX for the BDs didn't look great when he saw them; maybe they redid them. Guess I'll find out!

Now you gotta watch The Lawnmower Man :ROFLMAO:

My first blueray experience was watching the original Rambo for the first time. Unlike the other rambo movies, that was great. It's cool that all the old movies were naturally shot in high definition

For sure! I was looking into IMAX when Oppenheimer came out. Did you know that 70mm IMAX film is equivalent to 18K resolution?!

No, I had no clue. There hasn't really been any movies that warrant a trip to one.. Oppen was probably a good call, I heard its good.

At around 2015 I saw the original jurassic park in 3D twice. That was a trip

In the last 15 years there's been like 5 movies worth seeing

The original Rambo is one of my favorite movies! I wish they had left the original ending though!

He dies in the original ending, right? I love that movie too, none of the others interest me

I liked the 2008 Rambo movie. I thought that one was pretty well done.

In the original ending, Rambo and Troutman talk in the gun store that he is holed up in, and both come to realize that Rambo will never be able to live a normal life, and so Rambo asks Troutman to kill him, since he would rather die at the hands of a soldier that he respects, then Troutman shoots him. It is such a gut-punch after routing for him the whole movie, but the more you think about it, the more sense it makes that that is the only sensible way to end it. Plus since it was really meant to be an anti-war movie, the original ending fits that theme much better.

I never knew it was actually filmed, I heard that was the book ending. That whole scene with him and troutman alone in the trashed police station seems set up for that ending too.

One of my favorite movies is To Live and Die in LA and it actually ends with that ending, and the studio forced an alternate happy ending be shot. William Friedkin made it so deliberately bad the studio backed off lol

I’ve never actually seen “To live and die in LA. I’ve watched the car chase on YouTube, but I’ll have to put that one on my list.
The book of First Blood is very different from the movie. In the book, Rambo gets killed by Teasle, who in the book is a Korean War vet, but also Teasle is a much more sympathetic character in the book, and Rambo is much less sympathetic.

It's worth the watch, a lot of people immediately dislike soundtrack but if you can get past it, or don't mind Wang Chung, it's a really good movie through and through, the car chase ends up even better in the context to the rest of the plot.

It's one of those eternal time-loop time travel stories, nothing to do with the dog, more about making sure the modern Navy exists. I love that movie so much, it actually makes sense, time-travelwise (like the first Terminator movie). The F-14 shots were amazing, especially the whole sequence with the 2 Zeros strafing that little boat. Can you imagine being used to propeller fighters and seeing 2 jet interceptors whip past you overhead with that freakish sound?

I also like how Kirk Douglas eventually has to just roll with it, we're in 1941 I guess! There are a few YouTube videos that play through combat sim games, could a modern guided missile cruiser win the Battle of Midway, Pearl Harbor, etc. Interesting, though some of them cut corners to make the whole video less of a headache.

Me, too. It was a pretty straightforward action movie compared to the original, but it had some amazing shootout sequences. That truck-mounted .50 cal was pure comedy once he starts laying into the Burma troops, it must have been fun adding the CG gore to those shots.

Ya, you can scan actual movie film frames at a pretty high definition.

I saw part 1 of the new "Dune" in IMAX, that was fantastic. The way they shot those big ships, I've never felt so tiny in my life, hahaaha. Cannot wait for part 2.
