M5R2 input shaft length?

I am rebuilding my m5r2 transmission from a 1989 supercoupe and I damadged the input shaft gear while I was taking it apart.

I quickly mesured the input shaft length as 11” and ordered one for a m5r2 rke on cobra transmission and received an 11” input shaft that has 24 teeth. I compared the 2 and the stock shaft mesures about 10” 7/8 in length and has 25 teeth on the gear. Also the pilot bearing journal has different lengths and clutch splines start at different lengths.

I can’t seem to find any 25 tooth input shafts for m5r2’s that are 10” 7/8 long.

What should I do?

You have two different trans parts; they are not from the same transmission. They mesh with 1st gear, and will not interchange, There are 4cyl, 6 cyl, v8, and Ford and Chevy versions, iirc. I'd send that one back, and try again. Some parts that's just part of the fun finding them. :(

I figure I could probably use the new 11 inch shaft I got since it is for an f150 and I am already using an f150 clutch and flywheel and the same engine that was mated to that shaft stock.

My problem though is that the 11 inch input shaft gear has 24 teeth instead of 25 and the diameter of that gear is 0.100” smaller so it would not fully mesh with the cluster shaft I got.

Other dilema is that the cluster shaft I have has this teeth ratio 37-31-23-15 and the cluster shaft that matches the 11 inch shaft is 37-31-24-15 so it does have the same 4th gear tooth count so I am not sure if they would have made that gear have a larger diameter to match the 24 tooth gear or if they are using the same one only with 2nd gear different??

If anyone has the 37-31-24-15 cluster shaft could they mesure the 4th gear (largest at 37 teeth) diameter to see if it matches mine? I doubt it will thought as a 0.100” difference would mean the gear rides with a 0.050” gap inbetween the 2.

A possible final solution if I have to stick with the new input shaft I have would be to order the matching cluster shaft and matching second gear but then I would have the f150 transmission gearing but atleast have parts I can replace.

I will also attatch pictures of the damadge done to my stock input shaft, I don’t really want to reuse it, I am not sure if I even can but would this gear still be good if I smoothed around the chiped area?

I can't remember where I stashed them, but I do have a couple m5r2 input shafts ..
I would be willing to buy one in good condition if you do have one! And if you do have a cluster shaft if you could mesure the gear as I wrote I would be curious to find out if they are the same or not.

I'll check my storage if they're not in the garage .. also, mine are 94/95 so it may not be exactly the same tooth count ( although I do have the cluster gears to match )

Okay yes could you count teeth on input and cluster shaft? Thanks

I'd be interested in a 94/95 gear set if it's not what OP needs, or if there's another set available.

10-7/8" with 25 tooth count input shaft and matching cluster gear from 94/95 M5R2. Not sure my caliper is large enough to measure the 4th gear.

I looked over mine and looks like the tooth damadge is out of where the gear rides so I will reuse it for now but thank you anyways I will keep you in contact if I do ever need it again
