News that makes it hard to sleep. (Non Political)

I very rarely eat from any chain restaurants, fast food or otherwise. If I’m on the road and looking to grab something to go real quick I’ll hit up Wendy’s for a spicy chicken sandwich, but that’s more about sustaining life than it is enjoying the food. It used to be that independent places could be hit or miss so the chains were at least a known quantity, but with Yelp and Google, you can pretty reliably dodge the bad ones, so much better to support the local small business than the major nationwide chains.

Absolutely I support the local places where and when I can. But even some of them have now taken to shrinking their portions. I recently ran into this when ordering a Ruben sandwich at a local place - also in Terre Haute, IN. Now, everyone knows a Ruben should be piled high with corn beef. The sandwich that was served to me for $13 had like 3 slices of corn beef on it. I mentioned it to the bar tender and he basically blew me off. Since I was hungry I didn't push the issue further and finished the sandwich and fries. After eating I mentioned it again when he - strictly on autopilot - asked the perfunctory "How was everything would you like another beer?" My more firm insistence answer to the question, that the sandwich was undersized and and a request for a discount (Usually the employee, fireman, policeman, military, etc. 10% off) elicited an "I'll check with the manager." response.

After a few minutes he returned and said "The manager said since you've eaten the sandwich and didn't mention it earlier there's nothing we can do." Like WTF? I did mention it earlier and you blew me off! Long story short, I didn't tip the guy a dime, wrote a scathing yelp review of the place and never returned.

So if they gave you the 10% discount on a $13 sandwich, would you have given the waiter a $1.30 tip ?? 🤣

I don't think I've had a Rueben with corned beef; its pastrami around here. 🤔

Well, I think that is a predictable outcome when the money is constantly being debased. Just as prices rise for end consumers, they rise for businesses as well. That leaves the business in a tough spot. They could provide the same product, eat the higher costs, and make less money, but considering the thin margins that restaurants operate on, that solution won’t work for long. They could also provide the same product and raise their prices to keep their margins and theoretically their profit the same, but the higher prices are the most obvious incentive for consumers to go elsewhere, not to mention the loss of business from people who simply can’t afford the higher prices and choose to not eat out at all, so that option is also a loser. The third option is to leave the price the same, but cut back on the quality and/or quantity. If you buy cheaper meat and give less of it, that is less likely to be noticed than raising the price, and while not the most honest way, it is the most economically viable in the short run. In reality, most places will incorporate varying amounts of all three options, and while it certainly sucks for the consumer, it probably sucks for the business too, hence why many small businesses are failing, but more importantly, it is also a totally predictable outcome as government prints more and more money it doesn’t have!

No. No, $1.30 tip either. I just threw 10% out there as an example. As thin on meat as that sandwich was it should have been 50% or 100% off.

There are a few things in life you don’t mess with, and this list is far from complete but you’ll get the gist …

A man’s wife or woman, his family, his dog (think John Wick), his car or his motorcycle, his beer and HIS FOOD!

But yeah, corn beef, and piled high, is the correct way to make a Ruben.

I never cared for Tilted Kilt, the food was always lousy and it doesn't surprise me how flash in the pan they were here. Eye candy only gets you so far.

I can't deal with sauerkraut anymore. My mom made me clean out the box of failed kraut that exploded, and rotted. If I smell it I puke

That Rueben up here probably would be $18! Can't tell how the quality or the quantity of the meat might be though. :o

Yeah BW3 has sucked for a long time. There’s a few good wing spots by me, if you ever wander up this way Trunk we can get some wings n beer: https://www.aviatorbrew.com/

I was thinking the same thing. We live close enough together that we need to make that happen at some point. I plan to head to Rob's over in Carthage, NC at some point this fall for some work. I had scheduled the service for Monday of this week but it's just too damn hot. So I cancelled the appointment.

I remember the food being fine, if slightly more expensive than the Hooters equivalent while also being slightly better. Drinks were basically the same, though I mostly stick to beer when I'm in the sports bar mood. I've had similar/worse at other places without the eye candy, so fuck that option, hahaahaha.

Hahaaha, ugh, I had a similar experience. When I was a kid my mom would get those King's Hawaiian sweet rolls or whatever, really tasty, we would go through those pretty quick. One day I ate one that must have been mixed badly, I bit into a solid chunk of what I assume was just flour, it was almost like chalk, tasted very bitter but worse, I actually can't remember now. Anyway, that almost made me hurl, after that, I couldn't even smell those things for years or I'd be ready to puke again. I'm sure it's fine now but it 100% kicked me off eating those things.

Got a letter from the state, about my car insurance. :) They apparently just noticed I registered the Red cougar, but haven't bought insurance for it. :) It's still on ramps, getting the fuel tank drained. I'll have to call them tomorrow. :)

The ostrich ranch I work with is near Rob’s in Robbins. Never met Rob, but have driven by his shop many times.

Ostrich ranch, that's wild. I saw the last jumanji, made me understand Ostriches better. Kinda like a cassowary, just slightly different attitude.

What do you do, if you don't mind me asking?

I currently sell the meat and other stuff at a few farmers markets. Future plans include moving out there and becoming more involved with day to day operations.

I've roasted a pig before, but never cooked ostrich. A guy here in town has a couple of emu's, and an alpaca.

I've not had emu meat, but am told it's very similar to ostrich. I don't think people eat alpaca, those are mainly for wool.
Roasted pig is good eating.
