About 3 years ago my wipers stopped working, luckily my SC is no longer my daily so wasn’t too concerned, especially being in Seattle. I’ve combed over the forums about it and always heard it was a major pain to swap.

On a whim, I decided to take a peak at it. After seeing it was just 5 fasteners to loosen the wiper cowl/assembly and a bit of maneuvering it, I got it out. Tore it apart, cleaned it up, and then went looking for new motors.

Not wanting to put more money into it, at least for boring old wipers, I saw the motor itself had a cover that could pop off. It has 3 little copper fingers that act as contacts and one of them was just covered in grease. The motor was junk to me anyways so I decided to clean it up, grease up the gear, and put dielectric grease on the contacts and put it back together. Testing just the motor, to my surprise it came back together life. Put it together with the arms and tested it and my wipers have returned. Now to just vacuum out the pine needles in the cowl and put her back togetherIMG_0691.jpegIMG_0693.jpeg

Be very careful with those 1989 cowl covers. You would have a tough time finding replacements.
Definitely, mine has always been shitty since I got mine back in 2013. One of those parts I always look during junkyard adventures

Nice work. Always good to repair what you have for free. It might also be worth taking the wiper switch on the multi function stalk apart and cleaning the contacts on that as well. It's pretty simple to take apart. I can't find a post with pictures and/or where the link still works, but basically you pop the cap off the end of the stalk. Under that cap is a screw. Once you remove that you should be able to get it all apart and clean it out.

Awesome tip! I’ve got 2 extras around that I can definitely try on. Especially with these cars nearing 40 years old, parts are gonna get harder to find
