This is a very desirable feature in my opinion. Fortunately, it's reasonably easy to retrofit.

You need sockets and a hole drill (or whatever it's called?).

Many Ford Motor Company license plate sockets will fit, including most Panther ones.

Begin with a starter hole from the front. Make sure it's exactly centered.

Then cut the hole from the back. Be careful not to cut into the socket base.

Now for wiring: the absolutely worst part of this installation is feeding the wire through the door wire sleeve. Remove the kick panel. Start feeding wire from the door side and feed the wire through the small hole pictured below. (You can see this using your phone or a mirror.)
Then connect the wire to the feed of the foot well light.

Connect the ground to the door. There are actually two holes right behind the door courtesy light that you can use. Route wires away from window mechanism or any sharp sheet metal.

Now put everything back together. Not sure if I prefer white or red yet. Probably white.
The white lenses are very easy to find because junkyards have tons of MN12s available. Yeah right. No, the reason they're so easy to find is that the Expedition of those years used the same lenses, and Expeditions are plentiful in junkyards.

Sockets and lenses were a total of $11 at my local junkyard.
