I have a 1994 4.6L thunderbird with traction control. Its worked fine until recently when I cleaned off the tone rings with some brake cleaner and had a hard braking incident. Now on startup I see the Anti-Lock indicator light up on the dash, and the traction control switch is permanently light "off". Sometimes on startup it is fine until I put the car in drive at which point it lights back up.

Not sure if a relay went, or if its something larger. I'm hoping someone can help me understand how the wheel speed sensors work on traction control equipped tbirds? My understanding is there are two at the front wheels, and one at the rear diff by the pumpkin. If im correct in that understanding, can someone confirm if the sensors on rock auto would fit, and which I would need? I am not the most mechanically minded. Help is appreciated. 1746211326727.png

There’s two speed sensors at the diff. Try cleaning those off to as they get really gunky. When you say there’s occasions where the light is off at startup until you put it into drive is that right away or just when you start moving?

None of those are ABS wheel speed sensors, I think those were actually only available from Ford.

The pump does a self test around 18 MPH. If there's a fault or a speed sensor malfunction the light will come on and the system will be disabled.

Pull the codes and see what it says, then you can do pinpoint tests to see exactly what might be going on.

On my old 96 Mark I was getting a TON of codes: 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 33, 37 and 76. It was a diagnostic mess but ultimately the cause... was a bad RR wheel sensor. :zbash:

I have a 95 LX 4.6 with traction control. When my ABS check light was on the problem was the pump. I purchased a NOS pump on eBay and that corrected the problem.

Mine is intermittent so I am wondering if it is the ignition switch. At 369k miles and a medium stack of keys it could be. With the reminder of the codes I may go check and see. Then I have. Replaced the original pump because it was rusted to hell thanks to receiving years of battery acid.

When starting the vehicle the light the light remains off maybe half the time, when putting it in reverse it remains off. The second im in drive int flicks back on.
