If you want to weld all day, I say go for it. The money is very good and it's a highly sought after skill. I purposefully did not pursue the welding certificate in my trade ( pipe fitter / steam fitter ) and fell into the Foreman position, my pay is on average 10% higher than the journeyman welder. When I do a job with weld pipe ( anything 3" and larger unless called for ), I figure out the cut sheet lengths, order weld fittings, flanges, Olets and other materials - then I tell my apprentice to cut and bevel pipe and hand my cut sheet to the welder. It's a no brainer job, the welder does what I tell them to do.
