Dropping the gas tank and driveshaft install

Is there a write up that explains the differences in the years? I found the tech article about the electrical connector, but I'm looking for details on things like the output shaft, etc.

I'm surprised to see low mileage trannys near me for a decent price and am now considering being cheap and just swapping in a newer w/o a rebuild to get me back on the road. The longer term plan has always been to take her off the road in a year or 2 and turn her into a project.

Mostly Jerry's writeup.

From memory, for the 1998 MY (starting very late in the 97 MY run) the mechanical diode was used.
Also starting with the 1998 MY the internal wiring changed requiring a repin of the connector (or reusing the old style harness with the internals). Also starting with 1998 was a revision to the clutch material.
In 1999, the valve body was revised with more appropriate load capacity springs.
I don't know about many significant changes between 1999 and 2003.
In 2003 the hardened gearset was used.
In 2004 a turbine speed sensor was added, and the output shaft sensor was changed, then on known as the 4R75W.

I’ll have to read through Jerry’s articles again. I thing I’ll be less cheap though. I found a fe 02 trannys about an hour way that had less than 50k on the and thought maybe just swap them in and get a few years, but there’s still work to be done to get that tranny to work. So….

I found a 2000 w/ 127k for a good price locally. Much less drive time & cheaper. I’ll call Rob once I have that in my hands.

FWIW, something I've seen mentioned before is that if you purposefully look for a trans out of a car that was wrecked, the car most likely didn't have powertrain issues as the reason for its demise.

I saw a towncar trans that the ds broke the tail off of. The rear bumper was just back of the front seat.
I didn't buy it,lol.
Even an 02 will need new seals; the last one I just swapped was leaking the direct in a month. (slow 3rd and 4th engage)
Then I found the 127.5 mph bug, and wasted it.
