I may have done a burnout or shakedown run without overdrive in the year following the lapse, but that was on a country black top road🤣

Yeah, or more likely they DID continue to use their car w/o paying registration, the DMV fees racked up, something broke, and how the car "ran when parked"

So basically it’s basically guilty until proven innocent at the CA DMV…. Only you still owe fees if innocent lol

Either way that should be on the owner if they’re the negligent party, the fees transferring over with the car is completely absurd.

So basically CA just keeps the meter running (much like those self renewing subscriptions that I love so much) until they are explicitly told to turn it off. I guess it's an easy way to get some extra money out of people if they forget to inform them of what they are doing.

That is a lot of stuff to unpack there. First of all, congratulations on your kiddo! It's going to be a wild ride, and for about the first 6 months, lots of sleepless nights. This goes for @theterminator93 too.

Then, as far as your career change goes.... Are you going to be a "guy I know" 😂.
Thanks for the heads up! I’m sure it’ll be so worth it down the road, thank you!

Congrats on both!
Thank you brolio!

It’s basically the equivalent of adopting or fostering a child and finding out you also have to pay delinquent child support payments to the biological mom her deadbeat husband didn’t.

Basically .. most responsible people pay their bills - before the due date.

My gripe is the car, an inanimate object, is the irresponsible party, rather than the OWNER. If they had a car they didn’t renew registration on and accumulated all of these fees year by year, that delinquency should effect them and their ability to register any subsequent car, rather than passing the burden to the person who bought it, who should absolutely not be responsible for the fees incurred by the previous owner.

It's basically the same as buying a house thats being haunted. Then you have to call the Ghost busters and their services are not cheap. Also .. the previous home owners were meth addicts.

Have the kids and/or impressionable women in your lives fallen for these stupid Labubu, Lafufu, Hachipupu, etc. dolls yet? I DGAF about these dolls but its interesting to see a) a Chinese company POPMART actually making it internationally for their design vs mfg capabilities and b) hear about how impressive they've gammified their product drops.
A fellow parent who likes these things described how much she enjoyed the loot dropping process: you click randomly on an icon during a drop to reserve "that" item for purchase and the website gives you hints as to what you might receive (mentions color variants). Kind of like feeling a lego baggie to guess what minifig is inside.

While I'm totally glad my kid doesn't want any of this plastic junk, I am curious to hear if this fad has hit where you live and if so, how long do you think this generation's Beanie Baby equivalent will last. Apparently demand has dropped from Summer 2025 because of increased production but a quick google search online shows that the most expensive of these ugly ass dolls is being bid up to $3600. For a doll that sell for $27-30 unopened.

As with any fad without any long lasting utility (these things dont really DO anything), any bets on how long this fad will last? Do you think it will make it through the Christmas season (and be THE toy all these kids want) OR the fervor die by Thanksgiving?

BTW, the first time I heard of these doll was when I read about this wealthy Chinese heiress who crashed her $1M+ Rolls Royce into some Mercedes this summer while drunk driving. Her RR dash was covered in rare versions of these dolls. Given how well she's been treated by the Australian Govt, she's suspected of being a child of one of the CCP elite. Crazy

So here's my DMV renewal form. I got it a week ago so they give you plenty of time to figure it out as @dDUBb said, be a responsible adult.

No smog for me this year (it would say so in that blank space on the left middle), which is good because it buys me another year to get my car a CAT. I recently "fixed" it by just straight piping that shit.

SSSSHHHHHH, don't tell @Chingon1

So what about the responsible adult who buys the car? Because if I got hit with hundreds if not thousands of dollars in back fees because the previous owner was a deadbeat unbeknownst to me, I’d just say as the responsible adult I am “fuck it, I’m registering the car in North Dakota”.

Also you have to pay a fee to be non-op?(I assume that’s what’s meant by PNO payment) Geez! So many trolls under the bridge there!

My cat got stolen today off my CR-V in broad daylight and I am pissed, its going to be so expensive to fix. Not how you wanna finish a long day at school lemme tell ya

Geez, speaking of things responsible adults that have to pay for to protect deadbeat scum from facing the consequences of.

I hope the thief got lots of metal and rust in his eyes.

Honestly, the real easy way to tell if tags are behind is if the sticker isn't current. We're starting to get the 2026 tags, so if you're buying a car and the tag says 2024, you know they're late and that's when you ask what the deelio is with the expired tags. At that point, you walk from the sale if there's no honest answer from the seller.

Man. I've been there with my Honda. It sucks. I ended up with a universal CAT to get fixed for cheaper than OEM replacement and all associated parts.

I'd advise that the replacement one you get, you engrave the VIN.

And that’s a very reasonable point on the buyer……. But should it? You and I know how hard it is to find cars of a certain age are, but if you find a car with good paint, good body, low miles and the initial asking price is good with an otherwise clean title in hand but you’re effectively compelled to turn it down because it has a backlog of fees and nothing else significant?

This should firmly be in “not my problem” territory on the buyer’s part. All I need here is a signed title and that’s that. Last vehicle I registered last year didn’t even require a bill of sale. I have to pay sales tax but beyond that any other baggage carried on from the vehicle is physical to its condition, not bureaucratic bullshit like compiled registration fees that can render an otherwise good car a costly hassle.

In the case of undisclosed fees, a fee waiver can be applied for. The red flags would be the lack of smog report by the seller and more than likely mechanical or emissions problems directly relating to the lack of registration.

So many trolls under the bridge there!

The only ones I see are on the internet complaining about a hypothetical situation or very rare occurrence that doesnt apply to them. Same with gas prices.

This should firmly be in “not my problem” territory

Exactly. See above.

I have thankfully never heard of any of this garbage and I have no desire to support a Chinese company selling ugly dolls.

I think I paid $30 one-time to put my old tbird into no-op back in 2012.
No annual fee after that unless the car was going back onto the road.

CA law requires you smog the car before sale so if the hypothetical transaction happens in CA, the seller must either cough up a recent smog report (within 60 or 90 days, i forget) or cut some deal where the buyer takes on some amount of risk that the car isn't registerable (without getting good with the DMV on back fees). Lots of lemons cars in CA are sold with a bill of sale because they were street cars that got behind in registration and are simply not worth correcting to get back on the street so off to the races they go.

Some cars like my gen3 prius didn't have a cat that will pass CA smog (at least they didn't a few year ago). OE only was the only option.
My insurance paid me for a new one. While I waited for it to arrive, I picked up an aftermarket one off eBay and bodged it in (bolted it on the front, taped it to the pipe downstream in back because I didn't really want to weld on my back.) Drove the car around for 3 months, finally got my CAT replaced when the mfg got one to my body shop along with all the downstream piping, and then kept my eBay cat as a loaner.

A friend borrowed it a few months later and had a shop weld it onto what they left of his downstream exhaust so now I have a fully bolt-on loaner cat.

Looked at both trucks. Both need more work than I want / can take on right now. Yellow one needed electrical work, and the engine leaked from just about everywhere.

Blue one has really good bones, but needs a lot of little stuff, and needs the cab sectioned from a track related accident in its past (didn't see any impact points or crumpled areas, but the firewall was separating from the door jam)

Gonna look for a G8 GT next.

The Chevy SS got the upgraded interior from the Holden Commodore facelift, as opposed to the old style interior in the G8. The G8 interior really looks like an old Opel. Apart from that, I far prefer the G8 exterior, grille, etc.

The long wheelbase Caprice (I think called Calais/Statesman in Australia) was used by many police departments, so I bet they're available cheap, though they might be V6s (?).

The G8 interior is definitely more generic, I consider it a downgrade from the 04-06 GTO from a previous generation. The SS revamp was a big improvement.

Exterior, I like the G8 better too BUT the base G8 was also V6 powered so any SS you find will be high spec. Also SS is easier to rebadge as a Holden which somehow makes them look better 😆

Caprices meh, if I were to seek out an ex cop car on the cheap I’d rather pick up a Charger. It’s better looking than the Caprice which is really awkwardly in it’s stretched proportions and parts support will ultimately favor the Dodge since there’s just so many out there.
