Newb...Howdy!

Posting all this is way overkill, but I figured "what the heck" at this point.

The T-bird hasn't been my DD since 2010, so a lot of its service history is skewed because of that.

I bought the 94 Cougar in 2010 to be the DD, followed by the 96 Mark VIII in 2014 then the 98 in 2018. Aside from the Cougar all of them have been high-mileage machines... but perhaps you can gleam some useful info on the common issues that can be had as the cars age.

The Cougar didn't look pretty, but it was (more or less) mechanically sound. Only issue I had was a really weird loosening of the rocker arm bolts on the driver's head that allowed the intake valve on #6 to slip out from under it, creating a rather.... unique misfire. Probably a result of impoper servicing from the PO after doing head gaskets?

As you can probably see, buying any used car comes with its own unique set of issues that will creep to the surface over a few years. If you stay diligent with all the built-up maintenance needs of a 25+ year old vehicle and don't let stuff go for too long before it gets addressed, eventually these cars become extremely reliable.

It's clear from glancing through my own records that the bulk of the work on these cars is 1) fluid changes and tire rotations, 2) brakes, batteries and tires, 3) suspension components (ball joints, bushings). The 98 still has air suspension, but for the last 4 years I haven't had to touch it. Obviously an MN12 or a coil converted FN10 won't have those issues. The engines need very little service beyond wear items like idler pulleys, alternator bearings, serpentine belts etc. and if you address the transmission with the J-mod early enough, it can last 150-200k with regular fluid changes and a good cooler.

That's great info! As I said, my annual mileage probably wont be over 3K. My plan is to learn all I can, then find the car I want with low miles, take it in and have everything replaced that isn't within factory specs and then drive it. I imagine I will do like I do my bike and the one car I had long ago...once a year, a complete physical exam, replace, refresh, renew anything and everything not within specs. That process has worked for me for 55 years and I see no need to change it.....that being said...Murphy DOES live...shit DOES happen...and there ain't a damn thing you can do about it but deal....but you don't have to make it easy on Murphy by any means by thinking all is well and not knowing it isn't. Thanks for the info!

IMO the biggest weak point for MN12s is the front end. They wear out quick and parts are getting hard to find. Mileage doesn't really matter in that regard. After a decade or even less the front end will be due for a total looking over and need servicing in some way. If you don't do the work yourself the bill for a shop to fix it will get expensive quick.

When I bought my Cougar I drove it for the first few years as a daily driver, it's a weekend car now and is at 86,000 miles. Back when it was my main car it was very reliable. When I got it, it basically just needed front end work - ball joints, control arms, a front bearing. I had to replace the EVAP system sensors and a few vac lines after a year. It had a no start issue once, but that was just the common bad connection at the crank sensor. Otherwise nothing major was needed.

When you say that the front end parts are hard to find....little confused with that....can you explain further....looking at the MOOG site, they seem to be all there...Am I missing something?

I guess to elaborate based on my impression, GOOD parts are getting harder to find. Back in the day the only ball joints that you could buy that were any good (last 100k+) were the OEM parts made by Motorcraft/TRW and Moog's parts were a close 2nd. Since then, TRW/Motorcraft parts are NOS only, and Moog has diluted their branding and product lines in such a way that quality has taken a nosedive. They are notorious for parts blending: you can order two of the same thing and get completely different parts in the same box. You can exchange one of them and hope to get another that matches the one you kept (you'd think it's a 50/50 shot)... but then you get a third version of that part! :zbash:

After Moog got on the "shady parts list" for the mix-and-match antics, Raybestos Advanced Technology was the brand to get. As with TRW they are NOS only now too; at last glance they still make their "R Line" and "Professional Grade" parts but they are are service grade junk that might last 10,000 or 20,000 miles.

About all that's left for consistency is Mevotech and Dorman. Dorman was never considered a desirable manufacturer of suspension components back in the day, but from what I've read their quality is more consistent than anyone else these days.

Think of it this way: if TRW's quality was 100% and Moog's was 95%, Raybestos AT might have been 90% with Dorman and Mevotech coming in at maybe 75% with R-line and Professional Grade Raybestos products at 30% (these are my own made-up numbers). Since TRW and Raybestos AT parts are gone and Moog is no good anymore our best bet is to go with the 75% of TRW quality stuff. Scooping up the bottom of the barrel, you could consider those Ebay suspension rebuilt kits a paltry 5 or 10%.

Hope that bonkers analogy makes sense.

One thing that threw me for a loop and required a tow was the heater nipple on the intake manifold. Oh and the nipple on the radiator. Both are plastic and had basically disintegrated over time breaking free and spraying antifreeze all over.
First the heater hose split, was able to cut the split out clamp it back down and limp to a gas station buying a case of water to fill the radiator and make it home.
About a month out so later the radiator nipple let loose, tow.
A month out so later the heater nipple let loose another tow, that required a new intake manifold.
Those were~ 120k miles and 26 years old on a 96 v8 cougar that’s still my daily driver.

When you do anything around the cooling system, you have to be gentle. The manifold plastic cracks easily. I broke the origninal doing 5k shifts, lol. I always cut the lines off, by slitting the sides. That way, you aren't tugging hard on a fragile fitting.

When you say that the front end parts are hard to find....little confused with that....can you explain further....looking at the MOOG site, they seem to be all there...Am I missing something?

Two that I can think of quickly are the front shocks and strut rod bushings.
The only front shocks made anymore are junk. Even OEM Motorcraft brand front shocks are just relabeled Monroe's. All the aftermarket strut rod bushings are made of incorrect materials and will fail in short order, the correct Motorcraft are discontinued. IIRC SCP sells bushings that work, but they cost.

My OEM heater hose ruptured at 6K when grabbing second. :2eek:

I recommend adding "replace heater hoses" to the list.

FWIW the 1961 Continental polys have been holding up great on mine, those are the same as the ones SCP parks up 4x from energy suspension.

Obviously we all have our theories but mine is it’s the design more than the materials. The conti bushings are essentially solid pucks, identical other than one end having a lip that goes through the frame(I use that as the front bushing). The stock bushings are designed to interlock, the front end being a cone shape that receives the lip of the rear bushing. Under hard braking that cone shape one expands outward and if the material is too stiff it cracks apart, poly/thermoplastic is less flexible so those notoriously fail. The other component that only the OEM bushings have is a steel collar at the base of the front cone bushing, which is there to limit that outward expansion under load, preventing it from being squeezed to the point of failure. I think the bad thermos would even benefit from burning off and recycling that piece from the stock bushings.

Material, meh, poly/thermo isn’t ideal but these are literally the only cars you ever hear about strut rod BUSHING failures on. Ford and Chrysler used strut rod bushings on every RWD car they made made between 1960-1980 and 1957-1989 respectively. People with mustangs et al from that period have had failures of the strut rods themselves due to stiff bushings but rarely the bushings, which are of the simple puck design. MN12s have substantially beefier strut rods than those older cars so that break isn’t much of a worry.

JFC...you're as bad as me when it comes to keeping a detailed record of everything done to our cars.
I even take photos & videos and write up detailed documents on how I repaired/maintained everything I've touched and the tools/sizes used, for future reference. OCD is a wonderful things...sometimes.
