The official what’s your favorite car(s) RIGHT NOW thread(besides MN12s!!!)

Oh I agree, my list changes not because some latest and greatest new car swept me off my feet, I just like a lot of old cars and my mood shifts around a lot when I’m just randomly looking for cool cars online. Like yesterday I’d been thinking of Studebaker Avantis, today I was admiring the Loewy coupes more

The Studebaker section of the big car show was one of the fun sections. The guy made it sound like there is no parts problem. My family doctor when I was a youngster retired but I had heard that he is big into Singers. I wonder if he's still kicking

So in my intended spirit of the thread here’s my current evolved bunch today

3000gt VR4
IMG_8261.jpeg

The 73 C10 stepside specifically from the movie The Driver. (Back when square body values weren’t ruined by YouTubers I considered cloning this). For some reason though I yearn for it right now

IMG_8266.jpeg

Studebaker Starliner, or more specifically this picture is derived from, the “Studallac”, an early 50s tuning house special putting the then state of the art Caddy engine into one. Even without the extra power, these are gorgeous cars, way way ahead of their time

IMG_8267.webp

2007 Dodge Charger Daytona… is it weird I like these? There have certainly been way better looking and way faster variants of 4 door chargers since then, but for some reason these in their more gaudy colors hit me. I saw a yellow one for sale slightly worse for wear on the side of the road and couldn’t help but think hmm 🤔 (to replace the current DD!)

IMG_8263.jpeg

Lastly but not leastly, do concept cars count??? It’s my thread so yes they do! I thought of @Irv mentioning modern Lamborghini’s obsession with hexagons, but this is really the car that started it and I absolutely love it. I actually long wondered if Ford’s designers of the MN12 with the SC moldings and cornering light placement had this car in mind when they were designing it

The VR4 is one of those “don’t meet your heroes” cars. I always thought they were amazing, until I drove one. The ride is somehow too soft when cornering, but too harsh when hitting bumps, and the massive turbo lag makes them feel a lot slower in real world conditions than you would expect from their hp and 1/4 mile times. At the time I drove one, I was DDing a Subaru SVX, and honestly the only thing better about the VR4 was that it has a manual trans.

Oh I agree, I even had a friend with a regular 3000GT during high school and it frankly felt less exciting than my Dad’s then Nissan Maxima… but I still love the styling and the ambition of the technology put in them.

Also a SVX will pop up in my list eventually, I loved those when I was a kid! Most of my generation wanted STIs, but SVX was my acronym! 🤣

Not weird at all, I also love these cars as I grew up with them, these are the "fast cars" that I knew of before I knew what makes a car fast. So they have a special place to me as what made me realize that cars are more than just a mode of transportation

Not my cup of tea but on the topic of dodge, there was a dodge neon at that car show, I figured it has to be a car nerd gem?

Funny enough that was the 3000gt for me!

I was just out of high school when these Daytona Chargers appeared, basically right in between the Magnum wagon and the Challenger, I never really liked the bodystyle of them in regular form but throwing on some high impact colors and graphics it somehow came together. I always thought of them as guilty pleasures, glad I’m not alone!

SRT4s were legitimately cool at a time at least in my region, I firsthand saw them embarrass STIs and EVOs in drag races. The attrition rate was terrible though, they all got wrecked or rusted out 10+ years ago

The nerd gem is the PT Cruiser with the SRT4 powertrain 😆

Ok...so my initial post were all cars which I could reasonably purchase and daily drive. This post is about favorites that are mostly out of reach.

A few Citroëns. The SM limousine is a conversion.

A Rolls-Royce Camargue by Pininfarina, the most expensive car of its day. I also love its spiritual successor, the 90s Bentley Continental R.

A gorgeous American with those lovely opera window. Mark IV is prettier than V in my opinion.

A German American-ish car, the Opel Senator.

Here's a Daimler Double-Six, a car I love, with a name I love. Why is a British car named Daimler? Long story, but it's something about Gottlieb Daimler selling some patents to a British company before Daimler-Benz was a thing.

And something sporty:

Ooh! This reminds me, I didn’t define any clear cut rules of this topic but I just want to make it known now to all *repeats are acceptable* just try to use different pics!!!

I say this because I deeply love the Citroen SM, inside and out it’s a masterpiece and later I’ll probably use it 😆

Off top, the HIGHLY coveted Escort GT. I love a hatch.

Second would be the second gen barracuda fastback, thing looks MEAN.
IMG_9947.webp

Obviously the SRT8 Cherokee makes my list, would doesn’t like almost 500hp and a truck, sheesh.
IMG_9946.webp

Rounding off the list, and the ONLY car I’d sell my bird for would be the C5 Z06 specifically in lemonade yellow 😭

My buddies dad bought an Electron Blue one brand new in 02(I think, it was the first year of the 405 horse motor). Loved those, plus the fixed roof C5s remind me of the Cougar roof 🤣

I’ve been working on cars for 25 years, and have run my own repair shop for the last 12, and I can confirm that the newer cars are absolute junk, across the board, in a way that I’ve never seen before. It isn’t just that they are unreliable, it’s that they are unfixable!
Exceptional write up, thank you MadMikey for confirming what I have been hearing from owners of new cars.

So damn sad. Greed is so rampent in the world right now. It's rather interesting that cars made before the 60's would last about 100k at best. Seems we are back to that same type of, but the difference is "car makers know HOW to make a car last 300k but would rather get the money" as in the older cars the technology to make them last longer was not there. But cars were affordable back then, unlike now you are giving up a mortgage price of money for a car.

Absolutely love these. My dad used to have a 90 black on black lsc. I’d like to find one just like that and manual swap it.
You might want to find a Lincoln Mark VII GTC aftermarket model. They came with an optional 5.8L and T5 manual transmission conversion. There used to be a site called The Lincoln Mark VII Club, but I think the owner passed away and the site was never brougth up again. LincolnsOnLine has a Mark VII section for GTC parts, etc. I think there might be some write ups on doing the transfer to a 5 speed as well.

Good luck, I hope you find your dream car!

Note, I see that "The Lincoln Mark VII Club" is up again and I have sent an email about joining. We will see what happens!

Square bird fans, anyone?

I rember looking up T-Birds from the 60's and found out the 64 had a poor resale value to it and you could get one pretty cheap. My neighbor up the street has a black one just sitting in the driveway. Never runs it, does not have a 4 sale sign, nothing. Sad that the southwest sun is eating up the interior on that car. I keep wondring when I drive past by it if I should ring the door bell and see what they want for it and what condtion it is in. Wife would kill me if I brought home another car though...

We've only got a 2-car garage - one spot is for the T-bird and the other is for the wife's ride. If I had to get rid of the T-bird for some reason (e.g. rust finally running its deadly course) I'd be seriously torn between swapping everything over to another MN12 or picking up a 65.

I don't think I will be getting one of these anytime soon... er... ever.

You can buy a real Hummer for a third of that!

Actually, if you throw a few grand at it, the 6.5 can be a proper engine for that Hummer. It's so underpowered that improving performance may actually help MPG

Yes, but it's way cooler😎

Seriously. Hummers have a bad reputation but as a vehicle there’s not a 4x4 cooler looking one than the original H1.

Oh on topic, short list today but I spotted one of these today and I still think they’re badass. Much like I did Hummers when I was 8🤣

I saw one with same color grabbing gas near-by and we were chatting on 90s builds. I shoulda snagged a pic of them parked, he probably would have been down. Closest thing to a 4 door bird?
