The Unofficial "Ask a Stupid Question" Thread

Kind of like when we replace old backbones at the schools, covered in 5-10+ years worth of dust (inside and out)... then I think of where it all comes from.

I never forget to wash my hands before eating on those days!!
I worked with a lady who was an engineer dealing with space station stuff, she explained to me on the space station they recover all the sweat and urine and filter it for the astronauts to drink.

On the MN12s, are the door locks different than the trunk lock? Meaning, is it a different key?

It is for mine. But I don't have the keyless option as far as I know

My 97 has only one key for all locks.

My early model has a different key for the trunk, while the doors and ignition are the same, maybe all the early models were like that? and I know its factory like that too, mines of course a Canadian car so it might be different for your guys' early model cars

Your fuel door button is in the center console?

All 89-96 cars had 2 keys, one for the doors and ignition, and one for the trunk and glove box. All 97 cars got one key which works everything.

Then why do both my 97s don't open with the ignition key?

I first noticed it on my Pearl T-Bird the day moved it into the garage. I thought it was just gummed up from having been sitting outside for so many years and thought I'd revisit it again at a later point in time as the trunk release button still worked.

But then when I got my Gold Bird, I went to use the ignition key for the trunk and it was the same situation.

Are my T-Birds an exception?

If it matters, my Pearl T-Bird has a build date of August 1996 and my Gold T-Bird has a build date of August 1997.

97s also got the newer looking style ignition cylinder. I didn't know they got rid of the "trunk" key in 97 as well. That was for valet parking and keeping people out of the glove box....My newer Lincoln and most Ford's still have a valet mode in the infotainment system that can be enabled. The glove box also locks if you take the key out of the fob

My 97 had one key that worked in the doors, trunk and ignition.

When I had the refinishing done the ignition lock and door cylinders got replaced with NOS Ford parts for 89-96 (with the older style 8 cuts on the key, not the fewer 6 like the 97s got), so the kit didn't come with the trunk cylinder. So my trunk still uses the OG key that came with the car... which I can't find. 😅

When I first got my 97 the key would not unlock the doors. The bed up being so gummed up the wouldn’t turn. Graphite lock ease fixed that.

Is the PI or Mustang intake better or is there another accessible one that is good?

As an upgrade over stock? No. The true OEM PI is as good as it gets that’s accessible (used) It’s not just Mustangs that used it btw, crown Vic’s, town cars, explorers etc used it as well. It’s not really a rare item, it’s just kind of a roll of the dice it might have issues

I have heard originally it was aluminum and then they switched to plastic is that true and if so which one is better.

94-95s originally had an all aluminum intake. It’s terrible flowing, and the layout of everything is different from 96+ locations. PI intakes like npi intakes were originally 100% plastic when they were introduced, but by 2001 used an aluminum coolant crossover like the npi “recall intakes”. The aluminum crossover *mostly* solves or at least minimizes the issue, but the pads under the crossover are still plastic as is the outlet to the heater core

Are you able to find real PI intakes off of websites like American Muscle or can you only find them in junkyards or eBay.

Junkyards and eBay. Don’t be tempted by the Ford performance PI intake those sites sell, it’s literally the Dorman with FoMoCo “made in the USA” molded into it

Replaced the window motor "main gear" among the bushings last week. This week the new gear looks like this:

i.e. The window motor's metal worm gear has eaten off the new main gear. The window motor made a really funny noise when grinding off the plastic.

Lucky enough I kept the old gear, despite being filthy it is still in a good condition. Now what I'm wondering - Was it a mistake from me to use (silicone) grease on the worm gear + main gear surface, or is this just normal Dorman quality?

Only '97 they are the same. I was at the jy and trying to open a '96 and the key from the floorboard didn't work. Could have been a different key? I went thru the back seat.
