Winter storm this weekend!

It really kinda missed me; it's so dry here everything on the ground sublimed over the day today. It's dry out now, snow's gone.
It's 8 degrees f out right now.

Got hit HARD here. 100k+ in NashVegas still without power, and its just the poor rich people in Brentwood and Bellvue....

Ended up with 4" of Snow/Ice mix on the ground and 1/4" of ice on the trees.

We're at the point up here now where "it all depends on the track". Looks like you might get it Ron, one way or the other.

I was looking at the long range forecast (mostly looking to see when it might go above freezing again!) and noticed a high confidence forecast for another few inches forecast for late next week.

Here south of Richmond, we have about 4" of solid ice on the ground throughout the neighborhood. Main roads are clear. I have to drive about three long blocks to get to the main road, which I did today to go to the store, and...it was an adventure. I just coasted in 2nd. Fortunately, the area is mostly flat.

Been in the upper 20's the last two nights. The Aloe plants in the garden are now dead, as well as most of the ferns around my yard. Forecast says it may get into the teens this weekend; those temps were last seen in 1980's. If it actully gets that cold all my palm and citrus trees are done for.

Guess I can't complain too much because a lot of you have it worse. But it sucks to see plants and trees get killed.

Would spraying them with water just before freeze help like in citrus groves? And maybe that's just for slightly freezing temps? All of our stuff dies yearly in Iowa, so only asking because I've heard of it.

Ug. Round 2.

4 to 6 inches Saturday and Sunday. That’s a lot for here.

Not bad for us up here. Right now it looks like the heaviest will be the SE part of the state, Cape and the Islands. Hopefully only a few inches here but it's going to get very windy.

That is basically what the nurserys do to save their plants and small trees. They run sprinklers over them all night and the ice insulates them enough that they don't die. Many of the people do it here, the morning after below freezing days you will see peoples citrus trees covered in giant icicles.

My palm trees are too big and I doubt I can do anything. I have 5 smaller citrus trees; if the forecast keeps looking grim I might get the sprinkler out and try to save a couple

Here’s the latest projected accumulations map. The part of the state we call “Down East” is going to get clobbered with up to 15 inches!

Dodging a bullet with the snow, coating to maybe 2 inches. More on the eastern part of the state closer to the ocean. Biggest concern will be the wind and the cold. 🥶 Might go to the 30s for a few days early next week!

Chatting with my neighbor today about driving on the icy roads. He drives a Grand Cherokee. He tells me that he can push a button to lower his suspension. That puts more weight on the wheels for better traction.

My inside me: " "

My outside me: "That's cool!"
Yeah, lowering the suspension doesn’t put more weight on the wheels. It lowers the center of gravity.

The only things that really help are steel, attached to the tire.

I learned to drive in a farm truck that last had tires put on it in the 40's, lol. there was no traction in the fields. Great practice for ice and snow.

Driving in snow is one thing, driving on ice covered roads is something else entirely.

Being a good foul weather driver only gets you so far. There’s always the idiot out there driving in conditions that they are not experienced enough to handle that will hit you or otherwise cause chaos.

Believe me, I try to avoid it. It's half the weather and road conditions, then half the stupidity of everyone on the roads around you!

Woke up and it was -14 this morning. Ugh.
Last winter I spent in Ohio it hit -13. That hurts to breath.

I'm sure anyone that has to deal with snow and cold weather might have had to deal with ice dams. They can be serious problems with the interior of your home. But, this is not the way to deal with it!
