Chatbox Thread

Guy behind the counter told me they clear records like that after four years and he seemed kind of pissed that I had such an old receipt.

For some reason, retail/cashiers often take it personally when they feel like the store they work for is being "taken advantage of" (from their perspective), as if the replacement/exchange/return came out of their own pocket.

Many times it does. I worked on the retail side of the parts and service industry years ago and it was a commission-pay job. We were paid a percentage of the final bill along with incentives or bonuses for selling whatever brand or item was being promoted that week.

Anything that was a warranty sale was essentially unpaid work.

Nothing pissed me off more than someone coming in with a dead battery in something like a GM with its 500 hold downs and I had to go test and swap it out for free while the other guy sells $500 of AC or brake parts without lifting a finger.

Interesting example. It's sad to hear that some companies chain their employees' paychecks to something they have little control over.

My experience in retail was for large companies that paid a base rate - no commission. Even in those environments, the attitude was prevalent.

My "intro" into IT was working retail sales job at a place called PC Club back in the day. Think of it like a Fry's Electronics or Microcenter, but much more Mom and Pops style. They were pretty prevalent in SoCal and the greater SW part of the US.

Anyway, yes, the retail sales job was based salary of minimum wage and something like 5% of margin after a minimum sales floor, and the minimum sales floor was pretty low, $5k, IIRC. Whenever a customer came in for PC repair, us sales guys would swoon over to the customer because those PC repair invoices were 100% margin sales.

And whenever a return was made, especially on a high margin item, like a system build, it would defeat us. But I don't remember that the person making the return would take the hit on the sale / margin, it would be the person that made the sale.

Same thing happened to my car insurance rep .. i was trying to work with them ( farmers ) and he didn't give a shit until i canceled the policy - since I paid in full, he had already recieved his $300 customer retention bonus months before .. well they docked his paycheck and I finally got a call to resolve my issue. Too late. 🤣
