TM:
The world is turning away from Tesla's cars and Elon because of his demagogic behavior.
So what do you think will be the long-term driver of Tesla share value beyond its current meme level price (
- Robotaxis? They can't even operate autonomously in the tunnels (one way roads, no traffic) under vegas and instead rely on drivers. Their sensor suite has been hamstrung by relying on visual light sensors only (no radar and no lidar like every other autonomous vehicle company) so they lag far behind their competition.
- Robots? Some were actually remote controlled in the Oct 2024 event. That doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

On the tbird, yeah, I decided to sell it. Realistically, I'm not going back to Lemons racing. Most of my free time which I allocate on cars are working on my current car project which is still in progress (the Mondial EV conversion which is probably a year away from running on the street). I'd rather sell it as a full package to someone who will race it vs scrap it and sell the components. If you come out to pickup the package, you are welcome to stay in my guest apartment for a few days until you load it up and drag it home. Consider it a mini-vacation

I will either use the garage space to store the UTV and prep it for the 2026 Mexican 1000 (less exciting for my wife) OR it'll stay empty until I finish my Mondial and start my NEXT car project. My wife wants a classic BMW like a 2002ti or an old alfa sedan which I would restomod. I'm thinking either car needs a K20C1 and if I go 1974 or earlier, it'll be CA smog exempt. In theory, I could keep my tbird's spare engine/trans, properly rebuild it not for lemons but with CNC aluminum heads, but I've had a growly V8 now with the tbird. I want a ricer motor.
Hi Gunn,
Yes, I've seen the articles. Yes, I'm aware their sales are dropping globally, cars and chargers are being set on fire, etc. I've seen all the hate directed towards TSLA due to Elon's demagogic behavior. No, I don't agree with or condone his behavior. I honestly wish he'd stay out of politics. Is this short term noise? Yes, I believe it is.
There are many exampes of CEO's bringing hate upon their companies and yet those companies continue to thrive. To name a few:
- Uber and Travis Kalanick (2017)
- Amazon and Jeff Bezos
- Facebook/META and Mark Zuckerberg
- Disney and Bob Chapek
Elon's antics and backlash from that aside, I agree, autonomous vehicles (Robotaxi's & Full Self Driving [FSD]) are far from perfect... Yet.
You have to crawl and walk before you can run. This applies to everything that they're working on; Robotaxi's driven by FSD, robots, etc. I don't expect their robots to be at DATA from Star Trek: TNG or Bishop from Aliens level today. We're decades away from that. But progress is being made. Don't discount the future because we're not there YET!
To address the range of sensor suites that you mentioned, radar and LiDAR add expense and complexity to the vehicle. Radar has been shown to have issues with certain driving conditions (like rain and snow) and can sometimes lead to false positives or other problems in FSD. LiDAR is costly, has limited range and requires powerful processing capabilities to convert point clouds into usable 3D models or maps. Tell me, how exactly is Tesla lagging behind the competition?
TSLA's lead in FSD is huge. They are head and shoulders above the closest competitor. Can you name another company anywhere close to where Tesla is in this field that isn't relying on geofencing or restricting itself to a particular driving application or niche ?
Another segment that TSLA is heavily invested in and growing market share is their energy products including the charging network, Powerwall, Power packs and Megapacks. Other nonphysical energy services that TSLA is involved in include Grid Services, Virtual Power plants and Energy software.
In short, Tesla's long term growth trajectory will be driven by:
- Tesla is now a car company. They're currently working to ramp up and enhance manufacturing efficiency. They have reduced production costs from 84K per vehicle in 2017 to 36K per vehicle in recent years. New and expanded factories, new models (i.e. Tesla Semi) and upgrades of current models will continue despite the current political backlash.
- Tesla's next evolution will be FSD and Robotaxi's probably some time between 2030 and 2033
- Concurrent to cars and FSD growth in the energy sector will continue and finally ...
- Tesla robots (Optimus). When that happens is anyone's guess but for the hell of it, provided we don't destroy ourselves before then, let's say 2040.
… and then there’s this …
On your car and parts: Thanks so much for the offer to stay a few days at your guest apartment, it wouldn't be the first time I've crashed out at another members home. (Thanks to all who have hosted me over the years.) I won't be traveling to San Fran. but I'll look through the list of your parts.
You've got some great projects planned! Can't wait to see what you get into next.
