Q: What are you watching (TV/Streaming/Movies) and want to recommend?

My wife and I just finished watching Dickensian. It basically combines multiple characters from several Dickens novels and puts them in the same space to interact with each other. I must admit I am not familiar with a few of his works, but you don't really have to be to enjoy the show. It really was well done and imagines the pre-stories to a lot of the characters established in his books. The only bad part is they didn't make a second season.

This Ai generated Gladiator III parody trailer is hilarious!

Just finished watching AppleTV's Blitz last night.

Lots of hate and shade thrown on this one in the trailer comments. Overall I enjoyed this one for it's cinematography and Soairse Ronan of course.

Do I need to see JW 2 and 3? I've only seen the first one

Doubtful. I'm trying to figure out what sets this lady off? Did someone kill her cat? Or her dad? Or her dad's cat?

This holiday I just binged Alice in Borderland. My first take was "man, the Japanese seem to love torturing everyday people as much as the Koreans do (Squid game).... but the plot seems to go a bit deeper as the main characters try to make sense of the world they find themselves in. The 16 episodes across 2 seasons apparently complete the story arc from the first manga. Netflix made so much money though that they are releasing a Season 3 in 2025; it'll be interesting to see where they take the story.

If you liked Squid Game but were interested in perhaps a deeper story about how the crazy games affect normal people caught up in these worlds, it's well worth watching.

I watched most of that last year. That’s a crazy series! Plots and games are very well thought out and put to video. Had to have been a pretty big budget as the sets are great and the cast is huge with lots of character development. I really enjoyed it.

I started watching the Craig era Bond films a few months ago, and finally watched the final 2 over the last couple days. The most recent one has a well done Atmos soundtrack, probably the best I've heard of any film I've watched. Very effective use of the overhead speakers. :)

When I saw it in theaters I'd only ever previously seen Casino Royale (and at that, it was 10+ years since I'd last seen it), so I was a little lost. This time, having finally seen the other films before seeing it again, it proved to be a much more satisfying experience and a fitting finale to this chapter of the franchise.

I watched Free guy the other day, and now I've got a mariah carey song stuck in my head, lol.
Molotov girl rocks!

We have been watching the last reported news service that seems to be on YouTube covering the LA fires.. Fox. Just a shame (about both).

I watched Dereck's new video on his 68 La Sabre that he got from a friend, one owner (the friends parents) and then Dereck let it sit in his yard for 5 years.
Just a shame.

I also watched both episodes of Rebel Moon. Fast forwarded through a lot of the 2nd part. I also revisted The Equalizer, 1 and 2 (already saw 3) and paid for it by getting to bed after 2 am. I really need to stop doing that, but it was Saturday, I get to sleep in the next day.

Haven't watched that one yet!

I noticed a lot of the cars he gets going, end up parked in his field. He has made the point he loves rescuing cars because they deserve another chance on the road. Seems kind of odd that so many just end up in what might as well be a junkyard.
Would be neat if he signed the dashboard and auctioned them off for charity. Be interesting to see what they would fetch on eBay. He has put a couple of them up for sale on FB in the past

That’s the ironic truth about the whole will it run genre since the start, they get it running and drive it but it’s not much of a rescue to move the car from one field where it sat for years to another field where it will also sit for years.

But on the other hand who else is going to realistically truly save a Lesabre 4 door? How much would you bid on that car without the VGG “fame” to prop it up? $500? $1,000? An autographed shirt is a conveniently sized piece to hang in a man cave, an autographed land barge is a bit cumbersome to collect. Derek and all the other hosts of these sorts of shows like to spout “this car would make a great daily driver”, but when the camera isn’t rolling, are they? Or are they in fact dailying the late model GMC pickup or Jeep or whatever we only catch the shortest glimpses of in the background that actually starts right up and isn’t packed to the gills with nasty snake oil additives?

You make a good point and my concern / anger as well. Take SimonFordMan. In several of his videos, he just gets someone's old vehicle running for them and/or goes over the car and fixes a bunch of crap for them. I suspect he is making some money doing that on the side. But the one where he went to a someone's field and got an old Willy's jeep (turned into a Postal jeep I believe) running even though it was pretty far gone and the engine was in peices to begin with, was a "why". Interesting flicks.

As for Derek's 4 door La Sabre, I was saying to myself the same thing... "it's a 4 door and not worth much". One thing he does point out in his favor, is he pics cars that have a history, either for him or for the owner. I also think he is a farm boy and never got to have nice cars and once you buy one, you can't stop. But yeah, the whole "another car rescued" only to sit for years in his back yard, rotting. Get it running, bring home and sell it. Or at least if you are really going to keep it, "take better care of your toys!". Cover it up at least to keep the elements at bay. By the way, he did a show of a building he bought to store his "collection" in and work on cars away from home. An actual VGG business with an office and everything.

I don’t harbor any anger over it, the silver lining is even if the cars decay they are being exposed to people and I do like that Derek does generally do the lesser known undesirable stuff. For me it’s kind of like all those hundreds of MN12s I’ve pulled parts off of at junkyards, it sucks knowing every last one of them is gone forever, and many truly were very solid low milers, but they gave parts to me and many others to live on even longer, likewise the cars featured on these shows will provide entertainment for a long long time. I don’t like the realities of it but I’ll also make another cope that it’s better they rot in a field than be crushed.

Having said that I’m a bit of a cynic, and the platitudes about the cars history, the being great daily driver candidates I mentioned etc. I don’t really care for. Derek’s much more savvy than his screen persona, those are the right things to say to a broad audience but literally every vehicle in existence has history, in fact I’d argue something like a 1986 Dodge Caravan with hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock that still somehow exists today has a lot more of an interesting history than a much much cooler 69 dodge Charger parked in 1986. But which one gets clicks? …Exactly. He knows the audience, they want one of three things; 1) live vicariously through him buying shitty cars that should be towed back home and defiantly getting them running anyway(I fall into that category). 2) appealing to emotions/memories where somebody’s parent or grandparent had one of these and it’s heartwarming to see it live on. And 3) appealing to the car guys and gals out there who think anything pre-1974 or let’s extend that to pre-EFI cars are special and uniquely revivable compared to later models. In fairness that’s not a criticism I have of Derek and VGG as he does have “newer” projects but the “will it run” category. The latter being probably a core audience as there’s a lot of people who believe perimeter frames, points and Holley carbs are magically indestructible.

Always good to hear one's point of view here, thank you XR7. You make some great points in your commentary and in retrospect, I hope that I did not sound harsh towards Dereck (VGG) as he is, at the bottom, a business man. You are correct in what he is portraying in his show, much like any other Hollywood show about a family with issues, yet including the comedy parts. I do respect his knowledge of older cars and even the newer ones, but I had to laugh when an acquaintance gave him a Honda that had all the 80's "get better gas mileage" components and he ripped all of it out and stuck a carb in the car and made it run.

Yes, I have pulled a lot of parts off of cars that the following week where gone and I wished I had gone back the next day to get more stuff off of it. The car industry is what it is. We are a disposable country and I learned a long time about planned obsolescence. I too think how I would be able to own a car pre EFI and have to learn all about carburetors and timing and all the stuff that the PCM does for us. I then realize that what I have is my speed and even a new car I would be helpless with until I took the time to learn it all. I have to laugh at my profession that changes every 18 months with new processes and applications that you have to learn, each and every time. I gave up working on servers after they kept updating and updating and ... it never ends. I probably should have been a cook. New stuff, but the process stays the same.

I will stop here with my long winded diatribe.

More modern cars are becoming irreparable;I'm beginning to suspect its a feature not a bug. case in point: I've been working with my sis, fixing the blower motor on her ac. We replaced the module that acts as a resistor, as in our cars. it worked a few weeks, then dead again. She dropped it at the dealer, who replaced the module and blower itself. It worked a few weeks. No warranty on the repair, so she paid them to do it again. same thing. defrost was out yesterday. I suggested she get her focus back from her pos daughter.but she doesn't want the flex trashed.. The focus is old enough it can be fixed, at least.
She is considering buying a new car.

Remember when manufacturers claimed stuffing microchips linked to a CAN network that communicate do a half dozen modules into parts like toggle switches would streamline wiring and make diagnosis easier? LOL

“Yes, ma’am, we very quickly diagnosed the problem with our $10,000 dealer software and the solution is to buy our all new tech laden Bronco Sport! We even stopped using analog gauges for LCD screens that will develop dozens of little random colorful lines like our infotainment screens do! Let’s talk financing…”

Who's to say there's not a timer in the car stereo,(that autosyncs with her iphone,) looks at her bank balance, and programs it not to work? You'd never know.

I don't remember .. when did they ever say that ?? 🤔

On that note, I'm looking at my next mod - a BCM reprogrammer; to disable the BCM key programming feature and to enable the secret menus hidden in the programming ( lap timer, oil Temps, etc .. ) 😉

I will resist owning a car with a body control module for as long as possible. The MN12's are bad enough with their IRCM's. One of my other favorite innovations are the LCD gauges that are always lit up leading to people thinking their headlights are on and driving around at night with no headlights on.

Kind of hard to believe a vehicle equipped with LCD gauges doesn't have automatic headlights. 🤔

So .. the car stereo and apple have access to the banks. That's a far fetched conspiracy theory. I'm curious, does the HVAC stop working when you are poor, or maybe right after your tax refund hits ?

Here's another theory .. it's a shitty Ford product. 🤭
