Q: What are you watching (TV/Streaming/Movies) and want to recommend?

I don't remember .. when did they ever say that ?? šŸ¤”

On that note, I'm looking at my next mod - a BCM reprogrammer; to disable the BCM key programming feature and to enable the secret menus hidden in the programming ( lap timer, oil Temps, etc .. ) šŸ˜‰

Thatā€™s how they pitch it to Ford F.A.C.T. and ASSET students, and in theory it does aid diagnostics when it itself isnā€™t the problem. Itā€™s not like the end user benefits in any way. How does having the radio engine hvac on a can network enhance the driving experience exactly?

I will resist owning a car with a body control module for as long as possible. The MN12's are bad enough with their IRCM's. One of my other favorite innovations are the LCD gauges that are always lit up leading to people thinking their headlights are on and driving around at night with no headlights on.

At least you can ā€œhackā€ the CCRM to a degree, you could pretty much replace the whole thing with a bunch of basic relays if you desired to. The PCM is all the technology I want, EFI is the only electronic technology that has improved the automobile experience and that was 40 years ago, everything since has been garbage copied from zee Germans :BMW:

In fairness to LCD ā€œgaugesā€ they started constantly lighting the analog gauges in a lot of models sometime back too, which that combined with DRLs is where the problem really started. I remember when my Dad got his GS300 with its EL backlit gauges when I was a teen, same thing happened as so often happens now where he realized just those two little middle lights lit his way home. So now that itā€™s basically industry wide now we need the gimmicky technology of autolamps to solve the gimmicky technology of those, which of course will all be linked to the almighty BCM šŸ˜†

By aiding diagnostics when it itself isn't the problem. Comfort features require integration - the keyfob identifies the driver, your favorite ratio station turns on, and the HVAC adjusts to your preferred setting. There are different communication levels for various systems - the engine and transmission control modules talk to each other obviously and in some cases, the TCM does not exist ( manual equipped vehicles ) .. the BCM needs to know this because remote start on a manual is a bad idea ..

Cmon Matt, you already know the WHYs of all this. The real question is, how exactly does the majority of drivers define the driving experience??

Really? Old technology has radio and ATC memory, for example if we set the climate control to 68Ā° in our MN12s itā€™ll still shoot for that temperature from the previous drive cycle, same with radio presets, they donā€™t need a centralized BCM for basic memory to determine those settings. Itā€™s all integral to either of their respective head units, including every manufacturer of easily retrofitted aftermarket stereos. Same with Memory seats, same with the fundamental way adaptive strategy works in EEC IV and V Computers(which in our cases the TCM is literally one with). You can even troubleshoot the HVAC with a button combination to bring up fault codes without any software whatsoever when a fault does come up, as you can with ABS as well. Iā€™ll take your word for it on keyfobs, but thatā€™s a technology I will always see as beyond pointless. What was the problem with keys again?

I do indeed know the whyā€™s, but at the forefront itā€™s that the manufacturers would prefer these systems remain proprietary to their own software, and integration through the BCM discourages both DIY repair ability and independent shop repaiability unless they pay a hefty fee for their software. Itā€™s planned obsolescence. The majority donā€™t even think about stuff like this until their modern car with otherwise perfectly good mechanicals bites them in the ass with dumb electrical faults. The driving experience in modern cars is far more about the mechanical engineering than the software engineering, Iā€™m not such a Luddite to not acknowledge there have been drastic improvements in cars in the last 20 years, but the electronic tech is absolutely not the reason for it.

Really? Old technology ..

I know these things. šŸ˜‰

You're absolutely correct on a lot of those points - the latest and greatest technology makes the smartest features for the dumbest of drivers. I couldn't imagine the amount of networking in a brand new BMW, Mercedes, Tesla, etc. It's heading towards removing the driver completely.

Generally speaking ( as in, I know how GM BCM works ) .. everything is modular.

The BCM is more like your keyless entry module. It removes the "key" from the doors and ignition. The BCM is also the Anti theft module ( or in some cases, the method of theft ). The Engine control module still controls the engine just like the EEC .. the BCM just tells it to start or remote start. The BCM is an access point, to get back to what I was saying originally .. to reprogram the Heads up display, instrument cluster, and the radio.

The big problem is when the electronics don't work for You, they work for bezos jobs, or gates. Edge in new windows primary purpose is to serve ads,in the os. why the fuck would you want that? but it reinstalls itself if you remove it. When I cant use 7 anymore, I'll move to linux. Anything that connects to an iphone can access anything you access with it. Try this: talk about a obscure fast food place near your iphone, and see if you see ads for it suddenly. You don't even have to be talking on the phone, just have it nearby. I use this sometimes, to annoy people,by getting them hassled by places they hate, lol.

Yep, mobile phones are only good for pictures and phone calls.
Sick of friends and family fumbling over the pairing their phone to their car. The ride starts off on a bad foot

Another favorite annoying thing is siri, lol. Siri,orderv10 boxes condoms amazon; or tampons, lol. Or 'giant black dildo.

Kind of hard to believe a vehicle equipped with LCD gauges doesn't have automatic headlights. šŸ¤”
Okay maybe LCD gauges was a bad descriptor. Whatever they want to call the gauges that are always lit up. I see several cars everyday driving in the dark with no external lights on at all so they must have their automatic headlights turned off and they don't have DRL's.

This is going to sound crazy, but I still use a physical key to unlock the door on my cars. I still flip my rearview mirror when a truck with 8 billion candlepower LED headlights AND fog lights (cause you have to have your fog lights on right) comes up behind me. I determine when to turn my headlights on/off. We have all fooled ourselves into believing that we need all of these "convenience" features on our cars and that they make our lives easier/better.

I see it all the time. It pisses me off that people don't realize that they're driving around after dark with only their DRL's on because from behind the car is dark. IMHO MFGs. need to include tail lights ON with the DRL's.

Sweden requires this. If you go into the coding options of a Volkswagen, there's an option for "Scandinavian DRL". I've had it enabled on all ours.

Volvos have it too.

I had to dig in to figure out why people were reacting to one of my posts in "What are you watching (TV/Streaming/Movies) and want to recommend?" o_O

In an attempt to get this back on track - my wife and I are currently working our way back through Elementary on Amazon Prime. We watched the first few seasons back when it was on TV, but stopped after a point. We are now binge watching our way back through it. I do enjoy the show quite a bit.

Per the name of this post, I watched "SimonFordMan" new YouTube video. This one was more like a ASMR than a how to or not do. Take away from this show was "if you don't have a powerful enough impact wrench, drive down to your local Home Depot and just get a bigger one!"

I do remember that show. Very entertaining.

Amazon had a sale on 4K BDs so (among some others) I picked up Edge of Tomorrow. I'd never seen it before and it seemed like an interesting premise. That was a fun watch. And so another flick gets added to the list of "excellent Atmos sound design". :)
